DC Internship for Fall

Hello Dr. O’Neil, As the intern coordinator in Congressman Rick Larsen’s office, I wanted to let you know that we are currently seeking a fall intern in our Washington, DC office. Please feel free to share the following posting with any students who may be interested.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail or at 202-225-2605. Thank you, Cara Sullivan

The Office of Rep. Rick Larsen (D‑WA‑02) is seeking to hire a full-time intern in the Washington, DC office for the fall.

Candidates should have an interest in and knowledge of the legislative process and American political system, possess excellent communication and writing skills, and be able to work independently. Interns play an important role in the congressional office, and perform tasks that make the legislative process work. They will be responsible for projects such as researching and writing memos, assisting legislative staff in committee hearings, and fielding constituent phone calls and other requests. Other duties include leading Capitol tours and providing staff with general office support.

During their term, interns are encouraged to attend briefings and committee hearings of personal interest. Those with ties to Washington State or the 2nd Congressional District are strongly encouraged to apply.

While the internship is unpaid, we are happy to work with schools that offer students academic credit for the internship. If you would like to be considered for an internship, please email your resume, cover letter, and two references to Cara Sullivan at cara.sullivan@mail.house.gov by July 15, 2013.

P&G Major Elizabeth Popenuck Wins the Harry Cain Memorial Scholarship!

We are pleased to announce that Betty has won this $1,000 prize, which was established by friends and family of former U.S. Senator Harry Cain.  The award goes to a "currently enrolled undergraduate student who plans to enter the field of public administration or public service and who demonstrates a deep commitment to service in the community, specifically to individuals in need and human rights, proficiency in public speaking, and the courage to publicly defend personal principles even if opposed by the majority."

Senator Cain was an interesting, formidable character, and C. Mark Smith's biography, Raising Cain: The Life and Politics of Harry P. Cain is a remarkable work on Cain's life and times.

Please watch for the Cain Scholarship announcement for next year!

Civic Concepts Student Conferences: Prague, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur

Greetings
from Civic Concepts International
With more than twelve years of experience, 29 successful Conferences behind us held in Prague, South Africa and Dubai we are now ready, prepared and very excited to launch the very first IYLC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Our goal at Civic Concepts International is to enable motivated and ambitious young leaders to jump out of the classroom and into the world.

We provide outstanding students with an opportunity to feel a broader connection to their world; because once they are connected they are also involved. And once they are involved they can make positive changes because they are informed, inspired, determined and responsible.

Support from Universities are important to us. We therefore offer Special Affiliates of the IYLC to make use of their 20% partner discount to all our Conferences,  regardless of location. We also offer any University of College that supports 5 students or more an opportunity to join their Conference of choice as an Observer - free of charge.

I hope to see you or your students at our Conferences this year. For questions, concerns or to express interest in participating in any of our projects, please contact me.
